“I feel much more secure not having to roll down the window fully or rummage for my purse at toll booths late at night,” says Sunita Reddy, who drives frequently between Chennai and Bangalore for work.
“That peace of mind is worth so much more than what a Fastag costs in nominal value.”
Moreover, the huge digital trail from fastag transactions helps business travelers in tracking their expenses.
Varun Malhotra, who works as a pharmaceutical sales representative, finds this quality beneficial in his weekly field visits across Maharashtra.
“Reimbursement claims are so much easier now with every toll payment automatically recorded,” he says while looking over his monthly statement. “No more hunting for and storing physical receipts.
The Problems: How Fastag Fails
While the benefits are plentiful, Fastag implementation isn’t without its share of hiccups. In rural areas with unreliable electricity supply, systems then shut down and revert to manual collecting until power is restored.
During peak festival season when highway traffic multiplies, there have been transaction delays at busy plazas due to server overload.
Another issue could be with older vehicles that have metallic sun coating on their windshields, thus possibly diminishing tag detection efficiency.
“I had to get my Fastag changed twice because I later figured out my windshield was blocking the RFID signal,” says Vikram Singh, an architect settled in Chandigarh.
“Changing the mounting location eventually fixed the problem.”
For foreign tourists who are renting vehicles, getting the temporary Fastag is still a little cumbersome process, as it requires documentation that the visitors do not have readily available.
This administrative void sometimes causes bottlenecks for international road-trippers traversing India’s scenic highways.
A Future Well Beyond Basic Toll Collection

“ ₹62 Fastag was the best investment of our entire trip, my family and I drove from Kochi to Ooty in seven days,” says Deepak Nair, while rummaging through pictures from their trip.
“The time we avoided at toll plazas translated into additional sunset views at Dolphin’s Nose and an impromptu detour to Avalanche Lake — memories we wouldn’t trade for the convenience.”
Given that the roadways in India are expanding with huge infrastructure initiatives, the argument for Fastag only gets better.
What started as a convenience feature has become an essential tool for anybody who routinely drives the country’s increasingly sophisticated expressways.
